Position Title: Plant Operator – CO-CP – LV 6

Level: Outdoor 6

Position Objective

To carry out labouring and plant and truck operation duties associated with maintenance and construction of roads and drainage assets, or other associated civil infrastructure under the remote supervision of a Supervisor or Leading Hand.

Key Responsibilities

Shall include, but not be limited to:

1. Competent operation of ride-on equipment and light, medium and heavy mechanical plant.

2. Competent operation of rigid motor vehicle (truck) with GVM equal to or greater than 22.5 tonne or rigid motor vehicle and trailer combination with GCM not exceeding 42.5 tonne.

3. Undertake tasks associated with maintenance and construction of roads, drainage and other civil infrastructure including earthworks, concrete, pipelaying, bitumen and vegetation work.

4. Hands on labouring tasks associated with maintenance and construction of roads, drainage and other civil infrastructure.

5. Daily maintenance of assigned plant and work cooperatively with mechanical service personnel in the repair and maintenance of assigned plant, including recording of pre-start checks

6. Provide competent traffic management associated with the control and direction of vehicular traffic through and around work sites.

7. Provide a high level of client service at all times, to both internal and external clients.

8. Complete required paperwork in a prompt and detailed manner, e.g. timesheets, etc.

9. Undertake basic numerical calculations to a standard commensurate with the duties involved in the position.

10. On-the-job training of fellow work colleagues and transfer of knowledge and skills to fellow work colleagues.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• Current General Construction Safety "White" Card

• Current QLD Manual Car ‘C’ Class Open Driver’s Licence

• Current QLD Heavy Combination Truck ‘HC’ Class Licence

• Certificate of Competency to operate road construction plant and/or equipment – skid steer loader, roller, loader, backhoe, grader

• Current Traffic Controllers Ticket

• Good experience in driving trucks in varying road conditions

• Extensive experience in operating road construction plant e.g. roller, backhoe, loader

• Extensive experience in construction/maintenance of roads and drainage infrastructure.

Desirable

• Experience in concrete work

• Certificate III in Civil Construction.

Skills

• High level plant operation skills and competency

• Good truck driving skills and competency

• Good skills in oral and written communication

• Manual handling skills

• Ability to work cooperatively with others and foster a team environment

• Good skills in dealing with internal and external clients

Desirable

• Concrete finishing skills would be advantageous

Knowledge

Essential

• Good knowledge of preventative machinery maintenance

• Good knowledge of the Workplace Health and Safety regulations relevant to the Construction Industry

• Standard of education and/or demonstrated ability to read, write and perform basic numerical calculations to a standard commensurate with the duties involved in the position.

• Extensive knowledge of roads and drainage construction / maintenance works activities.

• Extensive knowledge of operation and maintenance of mechanical plant and equipment in road construction/maintenance related activities.

Desirable

• Understanding of Council’s Enterprise Risk Management Policy and Framework objectives as they impact the position.

Special Requirements

• Willingness and flexibility to work overtime outside normal hours, where required, to undertake assigned tasks.

• Commitment to working cooperatively with others and foster team environment in line with the Civil Operations/Civil Projects Team Book.

• Willingness to operate other construction equipment and undertake higher duties, where required, to meet task objectives, as directed by Supervisor.

• Proactively support, assist and communicate with the Leading Hand/Supervisor to complete assigned tasks effectively and efficiently and to improve service delivery.
