How To Hit The Big Time After Graduation

2022-09-14

Recently graduated? Congratulations! It’s time to put those years of learning into good use and hit the big time. How you ask? That’s a very good question.

Finding a job after graduation can be a challenging time but the truth is, there are thousands of people just like you, looking to catch their first break in the real world.

Not sure how to enter the market once you’ve got that degree? No worries. I can help. I’ve compiled a few things to help make yourself marketable to employers so that you can get your foot in the door of the industry you want to start your career in.

Start your search early

Even if the job description doesn’t include some of the skills you may have, or doesn’t quite tickle your fancy, it doesn’t hurt to apply for them anyway. You never know, some of your applications could lead to interviews. The more you interview, the more practice you get, and that won’t hurt!

Show them what you’ve learned

Most graduates are lacking in professional experience – that’s normal! Did you complete an internship or volunteer program while you were studying? Include those experiences in your resume and what you learned while you were completing them. By highlighting these life experiences, it will show you to be a well-rounded person.

Start working on your social media profiles

These days, platforms like LinkedIn are imperative for graduates when entering the job market.  Social networking sites are a great way to show off your experiences and professional skills. They will also give you the opportunity to connect with companies you are interested in working for, and network with professionals in the field.

Hiring managers and recruiters tend to search for candidate profiles on social networking sites and will most likely want to connect with you through them.

Be careful of the content you post on social media, especially while you’re in the market for a new job. Posting inappropriate photos could be detrimental to your search.

Network

Networking online is comfortable for a lot of people because you aren’t face to face with the person you are connecting with. But what did we do before the days of social media? You’d be surprised how many networking events happen each month. It doesn’t hurt to get out there and physically meet people in your industry. You never know who you might meet- they could be the next person to help you score your first real role!
